AMM 2022: Social Responsibility Trajectory of MMC Enterprises

The Astana Mining & Metallurgy - AMM 2022 International Mining and Metallurgy Congress will be held in the capital of Kazakhstan on June 16-17, 2022.

Traditionally, heads of industry ministries and organizations, representatives of national and international companies, investment funds and experts from Kazakhstan and foreign countries will be gathered at the Congress. AMM 2022 will again act as an interactive dialogue bridge between the public sector and the largest representatives of business, in order to discuss the priorities and issues facing the industry on the threshold of a new Kazakhstan.

The mining and metallurgical complex is still the fundamental industry of Kazakhstan's economy, with annual growth rates confirming this fact. According to the results of the past year only, mining of metal ores in the 12 months reached 3.3 trillion tonnes, compared to 2.2 trillion tonnes in the same period a year earlier. In the refining segment, the output of the metallurgical industry in monetary terms amounted to 7.7 trillion tenge, compared to 5.7 trillion tenge in the previous year. The country’s MMC accounted for about 30% of the total industrial output in the country, or 11 trillion tenge in value terms, by the end of 12 months of 2021 (Bureau of National Statistics, Agency for Strategic Planning and Reforms of the Republic of Kazakhstan).

In addition to the tremendous weight of the MMC in economic terms, the sector's role as a key employer (26.8% of all industry employees in RK, vs. 26.4% in 2020, and 22.1% in 2015) is also extremely important. Despite all the attractiveness of working in the sector, the MMC RK, like all industrial enterprises, faces global social responsibility and the problem of a shortage of qualified personnel.

The plenary session on June 16 will be devoted to the role of MMC enterprises in the social and economic life of the country. The issues of SMB support, development of the salary fund in the MMC, and further plans for the development of the industry will be discussed during the meeting. Companies in the MMC segment have a huge impact on the labor market, directly affecting the social well-being of the country, which in the current situation is a priority.

The ESG (Environmental, Social, Corporate Governance) strategy within the social direction actively solves the problem of personnel shortages in the sector. Today, the largest mining and metallurgical enterprises focus on environmental responsibility, decarbonisation, putting ESG strategies into practice, carbon neutrality and green metallurgy. Participation in the Plenary session and the session on ESG-transformation will be attended by representatives of the Government of Kazakhstan, the Ministry of Industry and Infrastructure Development of Kazakhstan, the Ministry of Ecology, Geology and Natural Resources of Kazakhstan, the Ministry of Energy of Kazakhstan and major market players. The Minister of Mining, Industry and Technological Development of the Republic of Cameroon has already announced his participation and representatives of the Ministries of Azerbaijan and Kyrgyzstan are expected to participate.

The content of the AMM 2022 Congress will also include a case study session on digital technologies, geometallurgy and digitalization of concentration plants with participation of Kcell JSC and Zyfra Asia.

There is no denying that the development of the mining and metallurgical industries is focused on the use of digital technology, productivity improvements and optimisation of business models.  The Autonomous Cluster Foundation Innovation Technology Park will hold a marathon to recognise the best solution to a production challenge among technology companies. ERG Exploration will present the application of innovative methods in exploration, which also serves as a new impetus in terms of exploration and subsoil use, as the President mentioned earlier.

Traditionally, with the support of the DRAGMET Association, the III Forum of Gold Producers of Kazakhstan will be held during the Congress. The Forum will discuss improvement of legislation to attract investors to MMC RK, global trends in support of precious metals industry, tax benefits and preferences, impact of tax regime changes on investment attractiveness of gold mining projects.

The second day's program will include the III Coal Forum, held annually in partnership with the AGMP. Experts will discuss the prospects of the coal industry and strategies for decarbonization. The AGMP will also hold a round table on personnel training for the MMC and effective employment of university graduates. The importance of human capital in the mining industry and contribution to the talent pool will be the main topics for PR and HR specialists of MMC. Kesarev expert was invited to participate in the master class of the GR section. Philippe Pegorier, formerly head of Alstom, will break down the paradigms of GR work in the new realities with the cases of 3 global companies.

According to the President’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2060, a roundtable on green metallurgy, decarbonisation and carbon neutrality as the main pathways to sustainable development in Kazakhstan will be organised as part of the AMM. Also for the first time within the framework of AMM there will be an intellectual game with participation of teams from among the participants of the Congress.

The AMM Congress rightfully retains the status of the most effective dialogue platform for identifying new development opportunities and searching for reliable business partnerships. Every year since 2016, b2b and g2b meetings have been held with subsoil user companies of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Delegates and exhibitors have the opportunity to have business meetings with representatives of ArcelorMittal, Eurasian Resources Group (ERG), KAZ Minerals, Kazakhmys, Kazzinc, Polymetal, Kazatomprom NAC JSC and Bogatyr Komir LLP. In total, more than 600 business meetings took place within the AMM, 25% of which resulted by the successful signing of contracts.

Traditionally, the annual Golden Hephaestus industry competition will take place during the AMM, with a competent, independent jury recognising the best professionals in the mining and metallurgical sector. ERG (Eurasia Group) is the traditional General Partner of the competition.

Iteca Kazakhstan Exhibition Company is the organiser. The State Partner of the AMM 2022 Congress and Exhibition is the Ministry of Industry and Infrastructure Development of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The bronze partners are AVEVA and Engineering Dobersek.
