New realities dictate new trends in the coal industry. The issues of searching for new export routes for coal supply, implementing modern technologies for the enrichment and processing of solid fuel into high-value products, developing coal chemistry and other ways of clean and efficient use of coal, ensuring safety in production, determining the prospects of coal generation in light of decarbonization policies, and increasing production efficiency are all becoming critical at the moment.

These and other relevant industry issues will be discussed at the venue of the IV Kazakhstan Coal Industry Forum, which will take place on June 1, 2023, within the framework of the XIII International Mining & Metallurgy Congress «Astana Mining & Metallurgy».

The Coal Industry Forum on the topic «Opportunities for the development of the coal industry in the context of the new energy paradigm» will be organized by the Republican Association of Mining and Metallurgical Enterprises (AGMP) with the support of the Ministry of Industry and Infrastructure Development of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

This year, for the fourth time, the Forum will gather leaders of government bodies, coal mining enterprises, national companies, Kazakh and international experts at its venue to discuss conceptual issues of industry development, define the direction of its development in modern conditions, exchange experiences and expand business contacts with potential partners.

The coal industry of Kazakhstan is one of the major sectors of the economy, supplying fuel for the production of more than 70% of electricity in Kazakhstan, ensuring the full operation of coke chemical production, and completely satisfying the fuel needs of the communal and domestic sector and the population.

Following the results of 2022, more than 117 million tons of coal were mined in Kazakhstan, which exceeds last year's production level by one and a half percent. In 2022, coal exports amounted to 32.5 million tons. 11.03 million tons were shipped for utility and domestic needs, 64.4 million tons were sent to energy complexes, and 5.97 million tons of coal were dispatched to industrial enterprises.

Coal remains the cheapest energy resource, least dependent on natural conditions. The cost of coal generation is significantly lower than alternative and renewable energy sources, which contributes to the affordability of electricity for the population, as well as the competitiveness of domestic production.

Moreover, the proven coal reserves in our country amount to almost 34 billion tons. By this indicator, Kazakhstan is among the top ten leading countries in the world. The industry provides tens of thousands of jobs and brings export revenue to the country.

The Forum is a key industry event and a platform for broad discussion of pressing issues of the coal industry, developing a strategy for its development, which will make the industry more competitive and investment-attractive. The positive experience of conducting the Coal Forum in 2019, 2021, and 2022 confirms the great significance of the event for the consolidation of opinions of specialists, the public, and government bodies on the development of this important sector for the economy of Kazakhstan.
