Dr. Volker Steinbach is geologist. After his studies of geology and a dissertation at the University of Mining and Technology in Freiberg/Germany, he carried out two years of research at the China University of Geosciences Wuhan. In 1990 he joined the scientific staff of the German Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR) taking responsibility for the area "Economic Geology South-East Asia". From 1998 to 2000 he was delegated to the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy. In 2000 he returned to the BGR to lead the "Section of International Cooperation Europe, Asia and Oceania". In 2007 he became head of the department "Natural Resources, International Cooperation" and in 2009 head of the department "Energy Resources, Mineral Resources". Dr. Volker Steinbach is responsible for the new founded German Mineral Resources Agency (DERA), which is a part of the department "Energy Resources, Mineral Resources" in the BGR.
