The Mining and Metallurgical Complex under Volatility Global Market Conditions

From 12 to 13 June 2014 the 5th Annual Mining and Metallurgical Congress, Astana Mining and Metallurgy will take place in Independence Palace, Astana. Over the years since its inception the event has built a reputation as an effective international platform for specialists in the mining and metallurgical industry from CIS countries and further abroad. The organizers of the congress are Kazakhstan's Ministry of Industry and New Technology, the Kazakhstani exhibition company Iteca and its international partner ITE Group Plc (U.K.).

The main topic of AMM 2014 is "Modernization is the main factor in the development of the Mining and Metallurgy industry."

Speakers planned for the plenary session include Kazakhstan's Prime Minister Karim Massimov, Kazakhstan's First Vice Minister of Industry and New Technology Albert Rau, Director of the Virginia Centre for Coal and Energy Research Michael Karmis, President of the International Union of Geological Sciences Robert Oberhänsli, President of the Brazilian Mining association IBRAM Jose Fernando Coura, PwC Eurasia Managing Partner Region Alper Akdeniz.

In total, roughly 650 delegates are expected to take part in the forum from more than 30 countries around the world.

This year, AMM will combine a number of specialized events:

  • The First Meeting of the Working Group on VOLKSWAGEN AG Republic of Kazakhstan;
  • Round table on "Energy efficiency at Mining and Metallurgy enterprises";
  • Mining and Metallurgy Company Forum on "Swedish Innovative Technologies for Mining of Kazakhstan"
  • Round table on "Modernisation of Mining and Metallurgy Enterprises as part of the Productivity-2020 programme";
  • Round table on "Development of human capital in Mining & Metallurgical Industry (MMI) of the Republic of Kazakhstan"
  • 2nd Kazakhstani Conference on Scrap Ferrous and Non-Ferrous Metal;
  • Round table for discussing the question of the creation of a consortium of gold-producing companies

The congress will end with awards ceremony for the winners of the National Industrial Contest, the "Golden Hephaestus. The General Partner of the Contest is Eurasian Group LLC.

The Main Sponsor of АММ 2014 is the Company Kazzinc - a major integrate Kazakhstan producer of zinc with a large proportion of associated copper, precious metals and lead.

The hallmark 5th anniversary AMM will take place on 11 June. The Congress will be used as the platform for the latest 95th meeting of the international organizing committee of the World Mining Congress (WMC), devoted to the 25th WMC to be held in 2018 in Astana. International experts and scientists are expected to participate in the meeting. As is known, during the 23rd WMC held in Canada in 2013, the members of the Organizing Committee for the Congress unilaterally voted in favour of Kazakhstan's bid to host the 25th World Mining Congress in Astana in 2018.

Additional information: From 2010 through 2013, the volume of metal ores produced in Kazakhstan grew from 651.2 billion tenge to 786.2 billion tenge. During the same period, the production volume of complete metal articles grew from 95.9 billion tenge to 169.9 billion tenge. The export of metallurgical products grew from US$8.9 billion to US$13.5 billion. Over 6 years (2008-2014) labour productivity in the metallurgical industry grew by 63.7%. Within the framework of the Industrialization Roadmap 50 Projects were implemented and over 15,000 jobs have been created. Thirty-three projects are at the construction stage. 106 products are being sold on the market that were not previously made in Kazakhstan. They include marine metal structures, pipe racks, composite metal pipes, cables, metal plumbing articles, types of valves, etc. The mining and metallurgical complex accounts for 7.5% of the processing industry, 2.6% to its GVA and 0.9% to the country's GDP. Growth in the share of the metallurgical industry in the country's processing industry amounted to 30.1% last year over 2010.
