Over the 26-year period we have made major achievements. Ust-Kamenogorsk Metallurgical Complex (UKMC) reduced CO2 emissions from 69k tpy in 2021 to 16k tpy in 2022. UKMC shared it’s plans on further mitigation of its impact on the environment. Metallurgists report that 35 environmental initiatives were implemented in the last 12 months period. Some initiatives implied preventive maintenance of equipment, optimization of production processes, filtration systems upgrade, and also included tree planting projects. Kazgidromet national monitoring service reported that yearly average SO2 concentration in ambient air of Ust-Kamenogorsk was 0.7 of the maximum permissible concentration. Airborne lead is stable and does not exceed the threshold and keeps at 0.5 of the maximum permissible concentration.

In 2023 outlook Kazzinc is ready to spend 722 million tenge for environmental protection. 315 million tenge is planned to invest in the ambient air initiatives. Next two years will be devoted to maturing the process of sulfur-bearing gases treatment. This will require Acid Plant reconstruction. The respective project designs have been already developed. Such initiatives are a part of Kazzinc’s strategy of reducing ambient air pollution. The existing acid plants will be equipped with offgas after-treatment lines by the end of 2025 which will help to reduce SO2 emissions by another thousand tonnes per the estimates.
