IAEA intends to begin shipping uranium to Kazakhstan in 2019

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) intends to begin supplying low-enriched uranium (LEU) to the IAEA bank in Kazakhstan in 2019, the TASS reported, citing the IAEA General Director Yukiya Amano. According to Amano, the IAEA is currently implementing two contracts for the supply of LEU.

“Our goal is still to deliver LEU to the IAEA repository this year,” Amano said on Monday in a report to the IAEA Board of Governors. In September 2018, representatives of Russia and the IAEA signed an agreement on the transportation of low-enriched uranium and related equipment through Russian territory to the IAEA LEU bank in and out of Kazakhstan.

The IAEA Low Enriched Uranium Bank was opened in Kazakhstan in 2017 on the basis of the Ulba Metallurgical Plant in Ust-Kamenogorsk. The main purpose of its creation is the establishment of a mechanism that ensures the guaranteed supply of nuclear fuel to IAEA member States who are not interested in creating a full production cycle and in good faith fulfill their non-proliferation obligations.
